Waste Minimization
Waste Reduction Targeting Zero Emissions
To create a resource-recycling society, Daifuku strives to minimize and recycle waste as much as possible. The Company aims to achieve zero emissions by reducing waste for final disposal at landfills. The Company's goal is to recycle 98% of waste.
In fiscal 2010, Daifuku cut the total waste generated per unit of net sales by 3.2% compared to fiscal 2005, a result that fell short of the medium-term environmental action plan target of 5%. To meet its goal in the future, Daifuku will work even harder to reduce overall waste.
During the same time, the recycling ratio reached 98.3%, which exceeded the 97% target, allowing Daifuku to meet its fiscal 2012 goal and achieve zero emissions ahead of schedule.

Daifuku's Responsibility for Ensuring
Waste Disposers' Appropriate Operations
Waste generated by business activities is appropriately processed in accordance with laws and regulations. Even when waste processing is outsourced to a subcontractor, the company outsourcing the work takes responsibility for the proper processing. Daifuku carefully chooses the best outsourcers and annually visits their facilities to ensure the waste is handled properly.

Digital manifests
At Shiga Works, which produces about 90% of the Group's industrial waste, Daifuku uses digital manifests to centralize information management and enhance the transparency of waste-related data. By digitizing data on the disposal of industrial waste, the system allows waste emitters, waste collectors and waste disposers to exchange information over networks via the information processing center. This framework also improves administrative procedures and leads to compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Reducing Paper Consumption and Recycling
Daifuku believes that wasting paper has a significant, negative impact on the environment, resulting in forest destruction and consequently, an increase in atmospheric CO2 levels. Based on this belief, the Company promotes paper recycling and sets targets for reducing paper consumption. At Shiga Works, in particular, Daifuku shreds all paper on-site. It also collects used, high-grade copy paper from offices as well as mid- and low-grade wastepaper, that are recycled into new paper products.

In-house handling of kitchen waste
At Shiga Works, all organic kitchen waste from the cafeteria is processed in a composter and eventually used to enrich plants and vegetables. In fiscal 2010, 15 tons of kitchen waste generated six tons of compost.

Innovations in packaging materials
Daifuku reduces the use of wooden pallets for shipping products. Wooden pallets are easily damaged and cannot be reused. In addition, disposing of them is expensive. Instead, whenever possible, the Company uses reinforced, corrugated fiberboard packaging materials, which can be disposed as regular waste and recycled. Also, reinforced corrugated fiberboard is lighter, safer and takes up less space for storage.

Waste separation event
Daifuku holds an event to raise awareness about waste generated from production, as well as to learn waste separation rules. As part of the training program, employees compete to separate waste quickly and effectively. The training encourages employees to make an effort to separate waste in their everyday work.
